I heartily recommend LeGuin - she's smashing (and I love her unreservedly for revisiting her early work with an affectionate but critical eye and writing stories to redress the gender imbalance there).

But, um, I think that not having read the books might be the only way to enjoy that mini-series. I suspect you'll spend an awful lot less time yelling at the TV that way. *g*
