If you received an invitation to a lesbian wedding and the dress code was "Semi formal optional" would you understand that this means, "Dress as formally as you like, though you can go casual if you prefer?"

I would read it as "we really would prefer that you dress semi-formally, but if you can't for whatever reason, then dress nicely, but don't show up in jeans."
