Can't you just do what I do and live in denial about it? I love to pretend that the original script where he survives is the real one and leave it at that. :-) But yeah, who knows on this one -- environmental damage does cause serious problems for peoples' (and animals') reproductive systems.

Perhaps I'll spell that out in a separate fic. I wanted to leave it open...but we can probably assume something bad happened during a mission. Or one of the railings in the cargo bay finally gave out.
