Sexism

This blog post creeped me out, and parts of it rang so true. The writer tells about how she was attacked online, and especially....

"The comments...got a little out of control, and people said some Not Very Nice Things. Because I am a woman, naturally these Not Very Nice Things quickly degenerated into attacking my sexuality, my sexual organs, and my ability as a wife and mother.

This is a well-worn path when attacking women online. We are not attacked based on our success, but on our suitability for sexual intercourse."

That really sums up how society too often sees women, and how easily femaleness gets attacked. Dislike a woman? Attack her for being too pretty, not pretty enough, too ambitious for a woman, not ambitious enough, call her a bitch, a dyke, a bad mother, a slut, can't-get-a-man, on and on and on.

Seanan McGuire is having a similar problem. (http://seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com/383618.html)

It's disgusting.

The article, while disgusting, is also a little frustrating because it has the feel of walking into a conversation half-way through. I tried looking up the MeanKids website but it has been shutdown because of the apparent antics, and that's all the information that's out there.

Now, this may be fanning the flames, but the whole "mean website 1", etc is frustrating to me. Call them out. Don't protect their identity ESPECIALLY if devolves into death threats. If they're going to be assholes and felons, they should be painted on the wall with everything else. Don't let them be cowards and hide on the internet, call them out. Oh, and call the FBI, too.

Respectfully disagreeing here...and I hope it's OK to jump in, [livejournal.com profile] stormkpr...

There's nothing to say that the author hasn't called the FBI or taken legal action; there's just no reason that she needs to talk about it online. The purpose of not naming the website is probably to ensure that they don't get attention or traffic--they are proud of what they have done and they don't need props or link backs from this woman's site.

Good point. Taken.

I don't understand the mindset behind hate and death threats. It's as hard for me to fathom as why someone would want to, I don't know, pour battery acid into their own ears. It's just.... I don't understand people...

In all honesty, I think the people making "death threats" to bloggers aren't deadly serious. Just blathering into the blogosphere and making asses of themselves. Maybe I'm naive, or perhaps clinging to what little hope I still have in humanity, but I don't quite see a group of people who only know each other through the internet actually organizing to carry out something like that.
