Sound on computer

What would you do if there was no longer any sound on your computer? And you'd checked to make sure that the volume was up and not muted, and that your speaker is plugged in and even has the green light on it that indicates it's working?

Be very sad and unhappy. I love my music....

What would I actually do? Probably try my other set of speakers...the cheap crappy ones from walmart that sound awful but are small and cheap and work... I would be sad...

It is a bummer, that's for sure. But what I don't get is that my speakers seems fine, they have a green light on which is like supposed to mean that they work.

But you're thinking the problem might be with the speakers anyway then?

Hope you get it figured out and it doesn't cost an arm and leg...

You could also try doing a system restore to the last checkpoint, in case there is some setting for the sound card in windows that somehow knocked the sound out. If that doesn't work, you might need new speakers. :(

Thanks for the idea! Do you know if I'd lose a lot of stuff if I did that? I've never done a system restore before.

System restore is designed to take your computer back to the last time it was updated....but it should not delete emails, music files, photos, word files, etc. You can back them up if you are worried but if you use the System Restore as Windows designed it, it should not wipe your system. You should find it in Programs > accessories > system tools > system restore, and the restore to the last checkpoint they recommend.

You are NOT reformatting

Got it. This is worth a try. Thank you.

I took mine to get repaired. with a quickness.

I may very well be doing the same thing.

Matter of fact, this has happened to me before--with the exception that I know exactly what happened to kill the sound. (I fell asleep with my headphones on once, twitched in my sleep, and sent the whole rig careening to the floor--the headphone jack got jammed and subsequently destroyed. I'm much more careful now about not falling asleep with my lappy still on top of me.)

The solution was to buy an external sound drive that you plug into the USB port. You'd have to use headphones or external speakers with it, but it worked well enough. But I do hope you don't have to resort to something like that.

Thanks for responding to my post. I might have to go this route.

have you tried plugging in headphones to see if you can still hear sound that way?

[identity profile] stormkpr.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, great idea! I tried it. I can hear sound. So must mean the speakers are busted, huh?

[identity profile] nytshd3.livejournal.com 2011-11-25 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
most likely broken speakers. could be a cord gone bad (or maybe kitty-chewed?) if you want to be sure, hook them up to another machine and see if you hear sound (or if you have speakers from another machine around, hook them up to yours and see if that works).

Will do!

P.S. - Didja get my email about picking a date for our holiday get-together?
