Gratitude for today
(These posts should be called "Gratitude for today/Despite the hellscape that is the USA")
- During my last time at Postcards for Swing States they said - again - that so many of their volunteers' signups have been people saying they saw my posts on social media!
- And given all the horrible things going on (SCOTUS, Republican-controlled states, mass shootings), I have committed to taking at least one action per week. Either volunteering at Postcards to Swing States, or canvassing for Lauren Underwood (I hate canvassing but whatever) or doing something with my local Dems. I've been holding to that so far.
- Also....something interesting. Latest analyses are showing that Sean Casten's seat might be more vulnerable than Lauren Underwood's! That's actually good news for me. I live closer to Casten's district and thus I'd rather spend my time canvassing there.
- Got the first CSA pickup of the year. It's always great to get that box of vegetables.
- Saturday continued to be awesome. We went to our nephew Ursulo's birthday party. It was fun. Ursulo has a younger, half-brother who we rarely see. He is adorable. So sweet and nice. Also at the party was Doris's brother's first ex-wife Marquessa, who we've always liked. We've been (well, I've been) low-key looking for a country to flee to, and she sold us on her native Uruguay. She said tons of Americans live there and they are welcome there, there's socialized medicine, no guns, and plenty of vegan food for me. :) So we have our backup plan. I need to really sell Doris on this if the country goes to Republicans this year
- Speaking of which....the NYT posted an article today. They said that all signs show the Dems will lose the House, but that recent signs show they might actually pick up seats in the Senate. Which might keep our democracy on life support.
- I did a small good deed. Someone posted on a vegan group saying that she's been struggling to buy groceries since she relies on her Etsy business for a significant portion of her income. So I bought a few things from her Etsy page. (Perhaps the woman was a shuckster but I don't think so, and anyway I got some great new jewelry now. She didn't even post a link to her Etsy page but others found it and asked if it was hers, and she said yes)
- And Doris was home on the 4th. She cooked soooo much. Vegan chorizo filling for burritos, roasted veggies, two loaves of bread, watermelon popsickles and a watermelon drink. (And oh yeah, there was a mass shooting at a parade 25 miles from us, but whatever I guess. Uruguay, here we come!)
- Fangirl news! One of my favorites, Jarod, has another gig on his IMDB page. It's a sequel to a Hallmark film he made. He had a big role in the original, so I'm glad.

Interesting that Casten's seat is more vulnerable. Maybe just a more conservative area overall?
lol what are you going to do with 4 bags of cilantro? I'm sure Doris will find a use for them. But that seems a little excessive. Plus a lot of people have that gene that makes cilantro taste like soap, so wouldn't that suck if that was your CSA box!
Was so good seeing you on Saturday!
Glad you had a good time at Ursulo's bday party! Family parties are so hit and miss. Interesting about Uruguay! Guess it's good you've been learning Spanish! But I would be really really really sad if you left. Though lbr, we should be right behind you.
Really sad that the Dems will likely lose the house. I hope it's better than we're expecting.
Sweet of you to buy stuff from her Etsy page! I got much of my stuff for asking my niece and nephew to be our flower girl/ring bearer from etsy and I loved feeling like we were helping support individuals. Is the woman local?
Wow, Doris was a cooking fiend on the 4th! Rollin was a cleaning fiend, which is much less fun lol.
Jarod must have called up his Hallmark CEO BFF and been like 'OK, I need another role!' ;)

Re Casten as compared to Underwood. Here's what I learned: one the redistricting worked in her favor so her district isn't as purply-red as it used to be and his isn't as blue-leaning as it used to be. Two, she has a lot more money raised than he. And finally, Dan Lipinski (who Marie Newman defeated 2 years ago) is making noises about running against Casten as an independent, which could spell trouble for Casten.
I know the president's party almost always loses seats in the midterms, and the Dems were absolutely walloped in 1994 and 2010. Add to that inflation, and it just won't help (though possibly the overturning of Roe v Wade and the general horribleness of Republicans might bring a different result?)
We're also told that Portugal is eager to have Americans come over and may even have some deal where you don't have to pay taxes for 10 years if you live there. But since we know an Urugian (Marquessa), I'd lean that way.
Go Rollin! It's so cool that he likes to clean.
The Etsy person isn't local though her orders sure get shipped out fast.
LOL on Jarod!

My therapist told me she had to hurry out on election day because she wanted to vote for Casten. I told her I signed up for the vote by mail thing. I loved being able to mail it in and get the email that they had received it and everything. I would like to think that overturning of Roe v Wade and general republican asshattery would help turn the tide a bit but idk. After the last few years it's hard to have any hope.
Interesting that Portugal would have that kind of deal for Americans! I assume it's for cash inflow? But wow!
