Something great happened! And something not-great happened!

Something great happened! And something not-great happened!

First, the great
Yesterday evening was the big annual fundraising dinner for an organization I volunteer with. We provide business clothing to low-income women who need professional clothing. During the dinner, the executive director took the stage and she announced the two volunteers of the year. I was one of them! I was floored. A lot of my coworkers were in the audience so that made it even more special. I must say I am surprised that I won it...there are plenty of people who volunteer as much as or more than I do. I got a cool trophy.

Now, the not-great
My performance at work lately has sucked. That’s a bit harsh, but I haven’t been doing well at work. I’ve turned in reports with errors on them. I have been slap-dashing it lately; been so intent on getting things done that I’m not focused enough on getting them right. I’m disappointed in myself and worried about my next performance review. I guess I need to take this as time to turn it around, go more slowly and thoroughly, and get more into the details. It’s never too late to start over and improve.

congratulations on the award! i know you love volunteering for them and it's really kewl that they acknowledged your efforts :) yay!

as for work stuff.... are you burned out? maybe you need to take a couple days off and rest and regroup? or is it that you just have so much to do that you don't have time to make sure all the details are correct? maybe have a talk with dave about it? i know you said when he got back from his sabbatical that some of his stuff was permanently transitioned to you, which means you might have more on your plate than you can handle. if you're swamped and you've finished a report, could you ask someone to just take a look at it before you turn it in and make sure you didn't miss anything?

Thanks! I think I need to sit down and figure out what it is with the work stuff. Maybe I am spread too thin...maybe it is that I just am too apt to rush through things so I can cross something off my list.

Congratulations! That's a great award to get!

As for the sucky performance, is your next review soon? If not, can you schedule a meeting with your supervisor to talk about it? Go in with a list of concerns you have about your performance, what you think may be causing them, and a few strategies for improving and then get his or her opinion on some other strategies or ways to cope? I wonder about burnout, too, or how achievement just seems to snowball. You know you do well, so you feel pressure to do better, and then when one thing goes wrong, things start to topple a bit. This happens to me some and I had a 10 period recently where I just could not get anything right. I even failed to prep a class and had to cancel it 30 minutes before start time! I scheduled the meeting and talked about some of the trouble I was having and my boss was understanding and we worked together on strategizing my way out of it.

Thank you. I love your ideas! I love that they are proactive. I think I will do just this. My boss is really cool and I think this is a great idea!

I'm glad! I've found that you can rarely go wrong in a work situation by being up front and direct. Unless your boss is actually out to get you, and it sounds like yours is not.

That totally makes sense.

Can I ask you a question on a totally-unrelated note? You're my fashion and beauty expert. I noticed that some of my shoes look a tad scuffed. How do you shine your shoes? Do you take them somewhere or do you use one of those kits?

[identity profile] sarahetc.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You can ask me anything, anytime. :D

I haven't shined shoes in a long time, but when I did, it was just with a little tin of polish and an old rag (towel or old tshirt). What I did was just to rub the polish on well, wait a little while, then buff it back off with a clean cloth. If you need a high shine polish on top of that, you can get a shine-polish sponge. Or, in a pinch, use vaseline or similar product (got nasty tasting clear lipbalm?). I used to set them up sort of assembly line, so by the time I finished putting polish on the last pair, the first were ready to buff.

Sounds like a plan! Thank you, I will try this.

Sorry work is rough, but I'm sure you'll figure it out. Congrats on the award! That's exciting.

Thanks so much!

Congrats on winning that award! You've been so dedicated and so enthusiastic with the group, and I'm glad that has been recognized. Go you! :)

For work--I'm sorry you're having such a rough time right now. :( I also think sarahetc's suggestion about talking to the boss is excellent--if you're burned out maybe it would be a good idea to take a few days off to rest?

[identity profile] stormkpr.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the congrats! My boss sent an email to the entire department about the award (someone who was at the event tipped him off), and it's been really nice reading all the email congrats from coworkers too.

I agree - Sarah's suggestions are good. I like them because they are proactive instead of me just sitting around worrying or stewing over it. About burnout - I don't know...I don't feel particuarly burnt out lately. (Though heck, I'd sure love time off to rest; I'll get some around Thanksgiving anyway).

Hurrah for the award! You really deserve it - I think it's amazing how hard you work and how much you put into charitable work.

Don't get too stressed about your work. I think all the suggestions other people have made (about talking things over with your boss, etc) are excellent, but it's important to remembet that we all have 'burnout' periods. It's good to recognise and address them, but it's a natural cycle, so you have to cut yourself a little slack :D

Thank you so much! I am still thrilled to have gotten the award.
