Fanfic thoughts and worries
Mar. 8th, 2008 07:04 amThe fanfic bug has bitten me and I feel like I’m getting ready to write more. It’s been way too long since I’ve written any fic. Here are my ideas:
1. Write a 4th book to my X-men trilogy. May need to ret-con the epilogue I wrote.
2. Do a new X-men story – some elements will be similar to the trilogy but I also have several new ideas. So this new story wouldn’t replace the trilogy; it could just be another take on some similar themes.
3. I have an outline for my Spiderman fanfic but oddly, I don’t think I’m going to write it. Usually when I get into a fandom, I’m in it for literally years. I have no idea why this one came and went so quickly.
Part of me really wants to just start writing now. The other part of me wants to let the story ideas germinate a bit longer.
But I’ve never been a procrastinator. And I think there’s only so long you can meditate on ideas before you just have to sit down and write the damn story. Besides, with my X-men trilogy from years ago, I started writing with just the idea for the first two chapters in mind and the other hundred chapters just sprang forth from there; I’ve never been a believer in the idea that you need to have a fully detailed outline before you just write. I do trust that the ideas will spring forward – they did last time anyway. Heck, even my epic Misfits fanfic turned out well and, again, I had only the first few chapters planned out when I sat down to write the thing.
There are a few things that are making me hesitate though. Re-reading the pages of feedback I got on my X-men trilogy helps my confidence while paradoxically also making me worry that I won’t be able to write something that good (pardon the conceit) again. I also worry that my “audience” is gone. I had regulars who read each chapter – but that was 4 years ago, a lifetime in the world of fandom.
Well, so what? My audience may have mostly forgotten me (can you blame them, given the amount of time?) and maybe I won’t be able to write as good of a fic as I did before. So? I can still try. I still have the drive and the desire and I know how I pen a good yarn.
I say I let the ideas germinate for just a bit longer and then just sit down to write and see what happens. I’m leaning towards #2 out of the options above.
Any thoughts and comments are welcomed.
(I hope nothing in this post came across as conceited).
