I love my new fandom. But the problem with getting fannish about and shipping real people is that they have flaws. Drinking and drug abuse seem to be very common in the drag community, and it scares me that my OTP admit to using drugs.
What makes this worse is that back in September, a contestant from season 2 of RuPaul's Drag Race died at age 27 of drug-related heart problems! The contestant who died, Sahara Davenport, was partnered with another drag queen (Manila Luzon from season 3 of Drag Race). Sharon Needles said in a podcast interview that he was really upset when Sahara died, and he immediately thought of Sahara's partner, and Sharon said how devastated he'd be if something happened to Alaska.
And yet Sharon and Alaska still drink like fishes and use drugs.
This sure isn't a problem with my other recent fandoms! One never reads about Rogue and Gambit admitting that they use cocaine. (On the other hand, X-men do get killed off, and great OTPs like Rogue and Gambit do get broken up by crazy writers, so there are downsides there too).
Well, what can I do? I accept that real human beings have flaws. The substance abuse thing just seems part of the drag community...I have to hope that my favorites will be luckier than Sahara, that their bodies will withstand the abuse until they decide to get clean.
