My Top 8 Fangirl Moments This Year
Aug. 4th, 2013 07:22 amI’ve been in fangirl insanity since the end of January. All my life I’ve had one fandom or another, though how deeply I get into each one has varied over the years. Fandom for me often provides a rush which I know I am addicted to. Here are my best fangirl moments this year.
1. Meeting both Sharon and Alaska in person at the end of June, at a vegetarian restaurant. They were so nice! Also, the fact that Sharon later ‘liked’ this photo when I posted it to Alaska’s FB fangroup.
2. My Top 10 Best Sharon Needles and Alaska Moments getting published! I had wanted so badly for this piece to see the light of day, and on a forum where others can Tweet and Favorite it. And it happened! I was also so happy with all the positive comments I got on it, especially the one from my writer friend![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
denisia who is not into Drag Race but still read it and said it was good. (Denise can write! She’s been published! And she took the time to read it and said it was good!)
3. The fact that Sharon has communicated with me several times on FB. He does this with plenty of fans so it’s nothing to flip over too much, but there’s been more than once that he messaged me back and/or commented on a post I made on his FB page. Which I think is still incredible and awesome even though he does this for many other fans too. He’s a busy queen with tons of fans and with gigs all the time. (Alaska's mom has also communicated with me on FB, as has Randy, who is Sharon and Alaska's friend and assistant. They were wonderfully nice too).
4. Meeting Alaska at the cast party in Philly. It was so loud and I could barely hear a thing, and she’d been at the meet and greet for quite some time already but was still sweet as pie.
5. Alaska making runner up and nearly winning Season 5 of Drag Race. Especially after many naysayers were posting that they thought she’d go home in the 3rd or 4th episode.
6. My friendshar_bernadotte getting into Drag Race too and playing with me in this fandom.
7. My hard-ass and often grumpy sister watching both seasons of Drag Race that Sharon and Alaska are in, and emailing me to say, “Sharon and Alaska just seem so genuine and adorable. It’s obvious they love each other very much and it’s just nice to see.” If you knew my sister, you’d be as gobsmacked by this as I was. (nytshd3, can we get a witness??)
8. There are too many great Sharon/Alaska moments on YouTube and episodes of Drag Race to mention, so I’ll just refer to the article in #2 above. Each one of them has given me a high and been so lovely to watch. (I actually think their cover of that horrible Sonny and Cher song may be my favorite….)
One thing I don’t have yet that I’d love:
To see them perform “live” on stage together. Both performed at the finale party in NYC in May that I was at, but did so separately. (And that was just not a banner night for them given that Sharon was sick as a dog and Alaska took it so hard when Jinkx edged her for the crown). I had my chance in Chicago but was too tired (and it likely was a good call since people who were there said it was jam-packed as badly as the club in NY was). I will get another chance in Indianapolis in September (we have an actual table, plus the one-hour time difference will help with my fatigue – I might be able to last long enough) or in December on the Drag Race cruise.

- Meeting Ivy Winters at the cast party in Philadelphia. She said, “You’re so enthusiastic!”
- The times I did see them perform “live” even though I didn’t see them share the stage at the same time - Alaska in Philly and both in NY. Although these performances go by in the blink of an eye for me, and I never know whether I should try to film it, watch it, scream and cheer, or stand and offer tips – which is why I guess I didn’t include this item in the above list. It’s a different kind of rush for me.
