The Execution of Noa P Singleton by Elizabeth L Silver – It is so good to read an entrancing, thought-provoking, well-written novel. The novel centers around a young woman who has spent 10 years on death row for killing her father’s young lover. The mother of the victim visits her, saying that she has reversed her position and now seeks clemency for her. There are twists and turns, the characters are complex and layered – I’m never sure what exactly I feel for the protagonist. There’s no neat resolution but it’s pithy, funny, and sad. I read this book in two days – granted, I was off work and slightly bored but that still indicates that the book is a page-turner, which I love. Grade: B+
The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction by Rebecca E Williams and Julie S Kraft – As you can tell from the title, this is a workbook for people who are trying to overcome addiction. I liked the format and content, but at some point, I stopped using it as a workbook and just read the book instead. There was a lot on loss, and I don’t think my addiction is or was caused by loss. There was also a lot on addictions overall and identifying your addictions and on how to lead a healthy lifestyle, but I am pretty much good to go on that piece. I did like its sections on mindfulness – like using meditation and other similar practices to ground yourself. It also had a good section on Values and using them as a compass for your life. The section on emotions and dealing with them was good. I wasn’t quite “in the same place” as some folks who could probably benefit more from this book, but it was still good. Grade: B
