Starved Rock
Jun. 9th, 2019 06:44 pmDoris and I had a great visit to Starved Rock state park. It was beautiful. We did a ton of hiking.
Our AirBnB was perfect; a nice, big, condo across the street from the park complete with a jacuzzi. We packed a cooler and did all our own cooking. (There are restaurants there, but only 1 is really close to the park; basically if we'd wanted to dine out at a place with decent vegan options, we'd be looking at at 12 mile drive each way. We were only there 1 night so it made more sense to just bring food and cook).
We booked to go again at the end of September because with this one-night trip, we only scratched the surface. There's so much to do there! There are other state parks near by, museums, mansion tours, an indoor waterpark, mini-golf, boat tours, even stuff like zip lining. And we didn't even hit all of Starved Rock itself!
Interesting, it's kind of like the Dells but with just less stuff, way WAY less of a downtown, way fewer restaurants. But....still there is plenty to do surrounded by natural beauty (just like the Dells). And it takes us only 90 minutes to get there as opposed to just over 3 hours! So that's why we're looking forward to our return visit. Almost kicking myself for not having suggested it sooner.
