X-men: Dark Phoenix
Jun. 12th, 2019 05:15 pmIt’s been almost 20 years since the first X-men movie came out. I saw it, got hooked, watched the animated series from the 90s, and got even more hooked. Other fandoms have come and gone for me, but X-men has always been my ‘home’ fandom, one I keep going back to. And now the Dark Phoenix movie just came out, and it is apparently the last X-men movie – or at least the last one with these actors, the last one until someone reboots the series, which likely won’t happen for a long time.
My random reactions are below. I will place them into two categories: Not spoilery and spoilery.
Not spoilery:
- This is the 6th X-men movie in which the character Storm appears, and as always, she is grossly underutilized. (That’s not a spoiler, right? No one actually thought that Storm was ever going to get her due in one of these movies, right?)
- Centering the story around the Phoenix was an odd choice. We already did an X-men movie about the Phoenix! Of the 8 million plotlines from the TV shows and comics to choose from, why pick this one?? (That’s not a spoiler either, right? The movie is called Dark Phoenix).
- After watching and re-watching so many Avengers movies, I believe the X-men movies could use more humor. Mystique says something funny to Xavier early on in the movie. And….that’s about it for the humor. Quicksilver is usually on screen for laughs, but the writers apparently didn’t feel like giving him anything funny to say this time.
- Despite Dark Phoenix’s bad reviews and bad ticket sales, I thought the movie was good enough. It’s still an X-men movie. I still got all the feels seeing them fight and watching the moments where they function as a family. That all still works for me really well.
- Random: The previous actor who played Cyclops was way handsomer than the guy playing him now, I love and adore Hank as always, I will go to my grave butthurt at the movies’ terrible treatment of Rogue and (the almost nonexistent treatment of) Gambit, I need more Jubilee and Shadowcat than we ever got, and I’m sad that we didn’t get Bobby in this one but he was in 4 movies which isn’t bad for a side character.
