re: half broke horses - i love it when the author reads the book and it's GOOD. i have been unfortunate enough to listen to a book read by the author who did a mediocre job, and I was once at a book reading where the author read a passage from her book and it was TERRIBLE. so its awesome when they can read it and read it well. the book sounds very good, and I'm pretty sure I already had the glass castle on my to-read list, so I'll have to add this one as well :)
i agree with you about being a female nomad... i couldn't live with that kind of instability either, and i would certainly not feel comfortable staying in the homes of strangers.
i can imagine that governess would have been tricky to do in a good way. it seems that books that require a large amount of research often struggle with the dryness factor.
bummer that jezebel wasn't enough to hook you, it sounds like it might have been interesting.
