If you received an invitation to a lesbian wedding and the dress code was "Semi formal optional" would you understand that this means, "Dress as formally as you like, though you can go casual if you prefer?"

Yeah...to my way of thinking that is how I would take it. Could always contact them to clarify though I suppose.

I think my brain would get stuck on the "semi-formal" part and worry that I'd be under-dressed if I went for the "optional" instead...

What is this about a wedding?????? :)

I'm trying to convince Doris. I realize I've always wanted one. I also have the mindset that it doesn't need to be hugely expensive or overblown. The tentative plan is to have like 20 people at our house for an exchange of vows, and then dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

If Doris agrees.

I hear casual and I always think "jeans". But if it's a wedding then I guess I'll dress up a little. And by a little I mean maybe I'll wear a skirt or dress.

ETA:

but you didn't say "casual" so ... Semi formal = a skirt.

Ok, cool. Basically I want people to be both comfortable and dressed, well, as formally as they want to.

Fingers crossed for you...it's a reasonable request. I hope Doris will agree and you'll get to celebrate your special day exactly as you wish! :)

I would read it as "we really would prefer that you dress semi-formally, but if you can't for whatever reason, then dress nicely, but don't show up in jeans."

Okay, on this whole subject of crazy dress codes for work holiday parties? Just got the invitation to this year's party. Dress code is "black and white semi-formal attire suggested". I get the semi-formal part. So the dress has to be black or white? Doris can't wear her purple dress?
