Yeah, submarines are complicated doohickeys. They're what one of my friends works on in the Marine Corps, and he is in a constant state of horrible frustration. They are apparently very naughty machines.
ASL is...different. The grammar structure is more closely related to French, but it's also its own language in terms of rules. I can be very infuriating for a hearing person, especially when slang is used and you're like "I have no idea what the hell that means, spell please," and everyone has a good laugh at you. If they can remember the controls for a nuclear submarine though, they can learn ASL. Especially when they have nothing to do all day but learn and have sex.
