I said I'd wait, but curiosity got the better of me. And what a treat!
I like the way you balance pace and detail. Nothing feels rushed, yet there's nothing extraneous. You have a great handle on the characters and their idiosyncrasies of speech. I love the insights into Zoe and Wash's marriage, not to mention the beautifully sensual depiction of their lovemaking.
You're tackling a difficult subject, and I like that you focus on how it plays out on a personal level. I wonder if Zoe has had any direct experience of racism. Her withdrawal from Wash seems to indicate that there's enough of it lingering in the 'verse to create a tiny seed of doubt. It's almost as though she's suspicious of Turkhana IV's poisonous influence--if they actually set foot on its soil, who knows what'll rear its ugly head.
Can't wait to see what happens!
Btw, if you haven't seen Battlestar Galactica yet, rent it NOW. I can't recommend it highly enough, and I think it'd be right up your alley. There's also a lot of crossover potential with Firefly.
