How long I give a book before giving up varies a lot. Some I know from page 2 or 3, usually I know on page 30 or 40....but some books I give 100 or more pages before feeling like it's not going anywhere.
With Spirit Run, I think I'd have preferred more on the run itself and its challenges and less on the author's background.
I wanted Doris to read Level Up. i really did. But she just won't read a paper book. She'll listen to a book on CD in the car but she simply will not pick up a paper book and read. Even for cooking, she'd rather watch Youtube vids.
