I am truly impressed by the amount of memoirs you read. I mean, I'm reading one right now, but it's . . . Sebastian Bach's autobiography. (Former lead singer of 80s Hair Metal band Skid Row.) Very different vibe from the stuff you have listed here.
The way painkillers, and honestly a lot of other drugs in the US, are administered and regulated--or not--is truly horrifying. I'm sorry you had that scary experience. You really have to learn how to wean yourself off it on your own sometimes.
I remember my mom was prescribed Oxycodone for some surgery post-op or other, and had to walk me through the steps for what to do if she had a bad reaction to it. I was like seventeen and definitely not in a position to be given that kind of responsibility. Fortunately nothing happened, no reaction, no habit-forming, but still.
THEN a few years later, Heath Ledger died of an OD, and I find out THAT'S WHAT HE WAS TAKING. I mean, holy shit. The way pharmaceutical companies bankroll the hospitals is at least partly to blame for that sort of thing, and it's horrible.
