What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted by E. Lynn Harris – I enjoyed this audio book, which is a memoir. Harris is a novelist who has had several books published. He’s also had a very tough background. He grew up poor, he’s had to deal with racism and with homophobia, his father was abusive, he’s had lovers who used him, he’s fought depression, and he’s watched many friends die of AIDS. I definitely was hooked listening to his story because he overcomes so many odds, and he tells his background in a very compelling way. I also was very interested in his work background – before he became a writer, he worked a bunch of corporate jobs. The only downside to this book I found was that Harris has had a ton of friends, and with their names flying right and left, I sometimes had a hard time remembering who was who. (Maybe the problem is my memory). Grade: B+
Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong – This novel was banned in the author’s native Vietnam. Probably the best thing about it for me was that it tells about life in post-war Vietnam, something I knew very little about. There’s a story of a family being torn apart over political conflict and their past. But something was missing, for me anyway. The novel held my interest well enough and the writing was strong, but I didn’t get enveloped in the story the way the book’s jacket told me I would. When I put the book down, I didn’t feel moved. Grade: C
More books behind the cut!
