On race and racism

A couple of my friends have recently posted great articles/thoughts on race and racism, and I wanted to share them with you here.

First, ninamonkey's thoughts on the subject. One of the paragraphs I found particularly insightful: "I think some folks need to re-evaluate their definition of "racism." Racism is not just the Klan running around in sheets. Racism is also assumptions built upon perpetuated lies (aka, "stereotypes"). If before I even meet you you are going to assume I'm lazy, violent, and have fifteen million kids (and I'm on welfare), then what hope do I have to redeem myself in your eyes? You've already decided, haven't you?"

And secondly, sweetvirago posted a link to an article on white privilege.

Both are worth taking the time to read.

Awesome, stormy...I found the original Tim Wise link (original article) and posted it to my LJ as well. Thanks for pointing it out - it really, really helps to know how many people are fighting, and fighting hard.

I agree. Though there's still so far to go, it can get discouraging. But we still need to hope.
