Something great happened! And something not-great happened!
First, the great
Yesterday evening was the big annual fundraising dinner for an organization I volunteer with. We provide business clothing to low-income women who need professional clothing. During the dinner, the executive director took the stage and she announced the two volunteers of the year. I was one of them! I was floored. A lot of my coworkers were in the audience so that made it even more special. I must say I am surprised that I won it...there are plenty of people who volunteer as much as or more than I do. I got a cool trophy.
Now, the not-great
My performance at work lately has sucked. That’s a bit harsh, but I haven’t been doing well at work. I’ve turned in reports with errors on them. I have been slap-dashing it lately; been so intent on getting things done that I’m not focused enough on getting them right. I’m disappointed in myself and worried about my next performance review. I guess I need to take this as time to turn it around, go more slowly and thoroughly, and get more into the details. It’s never too late to start over and improve.

Date: 2008-10-22 02:52 pm (UTC)as for work stuff.... are you burned out? maybe you need to take a couple days off and rest and regroup? or is it that you just have so much to do that you don't have time to make sure all the details are correct? maybe have a talk with dave about it? i know you said when he got back from his sabbatical that some of his stuff was permanently transitioned to you, which means you might have more on your plate than you can handle. if you're swamped and you've finished a report, could you ask someone to just take a look at it before you turn it in and make sure you didn't miss anything?

Date: 2008-10-22 04:19 pm (UTC)As for the sucky performance, is your next review soon? If not, can you schedule a meeting with your supervisor to talk about it? Go in with a list of concerns you have about your performance, what you think may be causing them, and a few strategies for improving and then get his or her opinion on some other strategies or ways to cope? I wonder about burnout, too, or how achievement just seems to snowball. You know you do well, so you feel pressure to do better, and then when one thing goes wrong, things start to topple a bit. This happens to me some and I had a 10 period recently where I just could not get anything right. I even failed to prep a class and had to cancel it 30 minutes before start time! I scheduled the meeting and talked about some of the trouble I was having and my boss was understanding and we worked together on strategizing my way out of it.

I think all the suggestions other people have made (about talking things over with your boss, etc) are excellent, but it's important to remembet that we all have 'burnout' periods. It's good to recognise and address them, but it's a natural cycle, so you have to cut yourself a little slack :D
