Episode: Till Death Do Us Part, Part I
Brief summary: Jean and Scott get married (sort of), Morph returns from the dead and tries to take revenge on the X-men, and the evil Mr. Sinister and equally evil FOH make their debut.
- One fan site says that Morph was resurrected due to fan demand. That really, really surprises me. I never got the idea he was that popular.
- I always love episodes where we learn more about the X-men. So if I’m not mistaken, from the wedding scene, we learn that Jean and Scott are Catholic (based on the priest’s garb, right?) Rogue and Storm are bridesmaids, and Jubilee a flower girl. The Professor is up front with the wedding party though it’s hard to tell what capacity he’s in. From what I can tell, that’s Gambit up front with the wedding party too. I didn’t see Beast, which really surprises me and I hope was an oversight on the creators’ parts; I’m sure he’s very close with both Scott and Jean – especially Jean. There’s another guy standing near the altar, close to Rogue and Storm. I have no idea who he is, why he’s there, and why Beast is not.
- It’s interesting that this wedding takes place in a church. When Scott and Jean “try again” in Season Four, their second wedding is at the mansion.
- Clearly Wolverine has a way to go before he’s going to get over Jean. I understand that he’s filled with pain and rage, and it’s a shame that he couldn’t pull himself together and attend the wedding. He’s wearing a tux, so he clearly planned to. The subsequent scene with Jean and Wolverine was interesting too. It’s similar to the one in “Captive Hearts”. They don’t say much, it’s more about the looks that are exchanged. However, my own recollection is that after this episode, it has seemed that Jean is more or less over Wolverine. (During this re-watch of the entire series, I look forward to seeing if that’s true).
- So when Jean declared Morph dead in the first episode, she must’ve just been having an off day then?
- Jubilee is very eager to catch the bouquet! She must want a love interest. We don’t see her pining after a boyfriend hardly ever in the series, though she did have a crush on Longshot later on.
- I would gently nudge the Professor and suggest that the wedding reception is not the ideal place to be discussing politics and Kelly. On the other hand, I guess the episode does have a plot it needs to move along.
- FOH makes its debut in this episode. They are the bad guys that I most love to hate, so I am glad to see them. I also think there’s a very interesting segment towards the episode’s start. FOH is attacking a mutant who protests that he has no special powers; he just looks different. Until the first time I saw that scene, I hadn’t fully realized that not every mutant possesses super powers and that some merely have unusual appearances.
- Kelly has really and truly changed his mind about mutants. I guess the events of “The Final Decision” were truly life-changing for him, but it’s rare to see someone really do a 180 like that.
- The second half of this episode is just chock full of good stuff. FOH’s aggressive attacks continue. Interesting that one store has a sign that says “We serve mutants”. Things are truly getting bad for mutants if they need to be told the places they can go to.
- FOH also was very smart in how they baited Wolverine, Beast, and Gambit. They unfortunately walked right into it. I also thought it notable that the three X-men were playing pool at a bar instead of the mansion’s rec room. It seems to me that more often they hang out inside the mansion – perhaps because of all the prejudice outside?
- Xavier rushes to Magneto’s aid when he believes his old friend is in danger. I recognize that this was essential to moving Season Two’s overall arc along, but it really was foolish of him to neither take any back up nor even tell the team where he was going.
- As Morph infiltrates the mansion, Mr. Sinister says, “Enjoy your revenge, Morph. I know I am”. I gotta agree with Sinister here! The scenes where Morph wreaks havoc with the X-men are priceless (and sometimes hilarious). Gambit and “Rogue” kicking Jubilee out of the room. Her rage at being treated like a kid, which makes her even more easily fall for “Storm’s” directive to go out on a mission solo. Gambit’s kiss of Rogue after Morph-Rogue tricked him. And although Morph has never been a favorite of mine, I did feel for him a bit when he muttered that his deviousness towards Jubilee was repayment for “replacing” him.
- Rating: There are two things I love a lot about X-men: interpersonal dynamics of the team and the fact that they have to fight against prejudice from the likes of FOH. Both aspects are used very well in this episode - 5 stars.

Date: 2010-04-03 08:19 pm (UTC)I really like Jubilee as the flower girl too, the whole Jean/Scott wedding in the comics was really sweet. I remember this one part about Jubilee thinking weddings are stupid and then reading Jean's diary about her feelings for Scott (and Logan!) then deciding that weddings were actually "totally awesome!" Or maybe it was "way cool", I don't remember.

He should really think about getting some sleep thought because the bags under his eyes could hold an ocean. :D

Date: 2010-04-04 11:06 am (UTC)Poor Jott. No one likes them. :) I do though. And you know, after the wedding, they're not in Part I that much. They're in Part II more though. (But I didn't want to wait to do the review...given how my life's been, who knows when I'll get to watch Part II?)
