Icky spam

Has anyone else had an increase in spam lately? The weird thing is, it's increased in both my personal and my work email, which I check from different computers. Both have spam protection. My personal email allows me to do the "submit as spam" thing without opening up the email itself.

I suppose it's one of those things that I can't do much about, huh?

spam senders are always looking for tricks to sneak past the spam filters that are set up.

the thing is, for them, its virtually free to send millions and millions of spams out, and even if only 1/2 of 1% respond, its money in their pocket. so instead of putting "Viagra" in the subject line, they instead put "\/1agra" or "vi-ag-ra" or something to sneak past the filters. the filters have a tough job because people still want to receive their "real" mail, but with the spammers constantly looking for ways to beat the system, its unfortunately inevitable that some days you'll have more spam than others.

i often notice that they come in chunks -- i'll get a whole lot of extra spam (most of which looks related/similar), and then it'll taper off, and then a month or so later, another rush of it.

i got desperate at one point a while back and set up a filter on my personal email with my friends' email addresses so that all of their emails would get filtered to a folder i called "real mail", but if you get email from strangers that wont help much :)

*nods* I bet you're right. And I think you're right also about it coming in waves. The last week or so there's been an intense wave at both home and work. During the week in April when I was on vacation, I estimate I got about 3 spams. The past 3 days, I think I've gotten 20. Oh well.

Totally unrelated note - I didn't get a chance to read the book you lent me on the plane (still haven't finished the other one I brought). Do you mind if I hold on to yours for a while so I can read it eventually?

I get my spam in waves of related crap (when it doesn't come in a can and I eat it with rice ^_^). Like recently, I get lots of stuff about Hoodia and oil changes, and every other day there's "$1500 in Emergency Cash!!" in my Spam Inbox. I have high filters on, and check every so often for BSC traders that I haven't friended.

It may have something to do with the summer coming up -- spammers having more time to do their dumb stuff?

I have a dumb question. What are BSC traders?

And thanks for your reply to my post. :)

You mean you've never heard of "The Baby-sitters Club"?

::gasp::

The Baby-sitters Club books, or BSC books for short, are another one of my collections. I belong to a trading community where I can sell or trade my doubles to people. They email me their contact info and I do the same, then we send the checks or the books via snail mail. Voila.

Ah, I get it. I have heard of the series but never read one. So basically it's a good idea to check to make sure that your filters aren't deleting emails that you do want, right?
