I just got the latest issue of my favorite magazine, Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture. Towards the end of the issue, there's an article on Jem! I haven't had time to do much more than skim the article, but the gist of it seems to be that while Jem had some good things for girls (strong female role models, lots o' girls working together) it also had some negatives (the good girl/bad girl dichotomy as seen with Jem and the Holograms vs the Misfits). The real bummer is that the article doesn't spend any quality time on the Misfits at all. They are mentioned but no analysis of the band is given at all. Interestingly, the writer points out that the show lacked good male role models.

One other thing. Bitch operates on a shoe-string budget and is always looking for ways to stay afloat They now have a partnership with Good Search, which is a search engine just like google, but the difference is that every time you use Good Search, they will donate a penny to Bitch, if you specify them as your charity. Doesn't sound like a lot of cash? True, but if 1,000 people do 2 searches a day, that's $7,200 for Bitch -- a ton of money for a cash-strapped non-profit. The site has already raised $230 bucks for Bitch - not bad. Just go there and select Bitch as your charity, and search away! You only need to select it once.

Speaking of which, I just got a postcard from Bitch yesterday. My first issue is due to arrive in 4-6 weeks! I may have to pick up this month's issue, though, if Jem (and most importantly, the Misfits) is mentioned therein.

4 to 6 weeks?? Wtf! I ordered that thing ages ago, right at the time we were discussing it. *sighs* I try to cut them some slack as they are a small, not-for-profit. But still. This totally sucks and it is not the way for them to allure more subscribers. Sorry, hon.

I love every issue of Bitch, but please do skim it before you buy it simply because the Jem article really does give short-shrift to our favorite Bad Girls.

No, I just feel bad that you have to wait so long. And the current issue really is great. I told razycrandomgirl that if I'm ever in a place where it's sold on the newsstands, I'll pick her up a copy but...I've only seen it at one place, it's deep into Chicago and I'm rarely there.

You mean like the semi-dickhead Rico? I don't know how Jem\Jerica let him get away with the two timing. Sure she was the same person, but he didn't know that. Their whole relationship was one being mind buff. He would basically run in between the two telling one why the other sucked. lol I'd hoped knew about about it and was playing games with his girlfriend. But that would be mean also ...

Yeah, Rio was such a loser. There's no excuse for his two-timing, even though his girlfriend was lying to him by continuing the deception. Add to that the slimy Eric Raymond, creepy Techrat, and ego-maniac Riot...Jem didn't have great male models.

But yeah, lots of girls liked Rio when they were young and didn't know better. I'm glad you know better now, hon. :-)

Yes. Rio. My bad. Apparently Jerrica & Kimber's (I hope that's sort for Kimberly) dad was a nice guy, but he was dead before the show started. :\

You have all the DVD's?

Yeah, that's true -- Emmett Benton was a good guy, but he's only there in flashbacks.

I do have all the DVDs except they never released the last 12 episodes or so, and I have them only on VHS. I keep meaning to convert them over to DVD.

I'm still waiting for X-Men to come out on DVD. Marvel better pick up the pace!

I received my issue! Of course I had to go right to that Jem article. I'm not sure how I feel about it...I agreed with the writer on a lot of points but I also felt they missed a lot of others. let me know when you've read it through so we can discuss it! :)
