Some more good things

My gratitude post today is basically fandom and food!
- I'm pleased with how I spent my Sunday doing "batch cooking" for the week. I made winter vegetable hash and teriyaki veg noodles. And then I had some time today, so I made a new recipe from the Forks Over Knives cookbook. I'd never made it before - it's a salad with sweet potatoes, rice, cabbage, grapes, peanuts, cilantro and a dressing consisting of rice vinegar, lime juice, soy sauce, and pepper. And OMG it was fantastic! (And Doris and I now have enough dishes to provide us lunch and dinner for at least the next 3-4 days)
- The actor from The Outpost (Jake Stormoen) scheduled another round of Cameo calls! So of course I got a ticket. It's on Sunday, and I'm really looking forward to it. I think I like it partially because I get an excuse to put on makeup, false eyelashes, and to do my hair.
- And hey game night is Saturday! So I can also do makeup and hair that day if I want. (And now I'm like 'ugh, I have to look presentable 2 days in a row'. JK!)
- On the Spartacus discord, we were talking about the actor (Antonio te Maioha) who portrayed one of my favorite characters (Barca). Someone linked to an old Facebook page that either Antonio himself ran, or that he perhaps had a social media manager or a friend manage. All the posts were written as if they came from him. There were some great pics on there that I'd never seen before, so I happily saved them! And he's an environmental activist in his native New Zealand so there were some good posts on that.
But two things are sad about it. One is that he hasn't updated the page since 2017. Either he got tired of it, or tired of paying a social media manager to do it, or he saw no value in it, or heck FB has been declining in popularity since before 2017 so maybe that was a factor. Antonio has no social media presence nowadays. I really wish he would do some form of social media.
The other kinda sad thing? He made a comment shouting out to the 2 actors on Spartacus who had played Barca's love interests, and he said he was "blessed" to act opposite both of the men who had played Barca's partners, and they were both "great people, great souls". I thought that was supersweet and I was so happy to see that. (FWIW, Antonio and both of the actors who played Barca's partners are straight). So what's the sad thing there? As far as I know, Antonio has never had another on-screen love interest. And he likely never will get another one. His roles have all been supporting roles, and he is often a bad guy. He is brown-skinned and 6'4" and 51 years old now (he was 38-39 when filming Spartacus) and he looks "tough". I hate the fact that he gets typecast and that he might truly never get another on-camera love interest. (So, uh, I guess it's good that he liked the 2 dudes who he got to kiss on camera?) :)

Date: 2022-02-10 02:36 am (UTC)What is Cameo like? I've seen those getting promoted occasionally and I have no idea what that means. Is it a video message?

Date: 2022-02-10 11:33 am (UTC)With Cameo, there are a few ways it can be used. The main one is that you book a video from the person. You get a limited # of characters to say what you want (a pep talk? a Valentine's Day message to someone? An answer to a question?) Then they make the video and you get a link to it.
The other thing is that the celeb can opt to do Cameo calls. They take place at a specific date and time, and the fan has to buy a ticket. On the specified date/time, you get a 3 minute video call with the celeb.
Sachin's only doing the first one now, but I hope he'll do the calls too! Those are fun.

Date: 2022-02-11 03:32 pm (UTC)Okay, interesting. I was wondering if it was a Skype call, or a recorded message. This kind of reminds me of those Celebrity Hotlines things they used to have in the 80s and 90s. Do you remember those? You'd call like a 900 number and listen to a message from whoever it was? This is like that, but for the digital era. Except personalized, which is kind of cool.

Date: 2022-02-11 03:43 am (UTC)Maybe Sachin will schedule some Cameo calls too? Hope it's fun!
LOL I'm 100% with you on looking presentable 2 days in a row. When I have Teams meetings more than every other day I sometimes get grumpy about it
Really cool about finding the old FB page of Antonio's, but yeah, disappointing that he hasn't been active on there. Has he had a lot of roles? Idk how much of a "main" role Barca was but nice that he got to have a relatively meaty role there. Maybe a publicist encouraged him to be on FB but he felt it wasn't helping him get roles? Interesting that he has no social media presence now, it seems like actors need it more than ever.

Date: 2022-02-11 04:39 pm (UTC)I do want to suggest the Cameo calls to him. They are so much fun.
That's the 1 thing I can't wrap my head around - why an actor would have *no* social media presence, and in fact be so hard to find. Another Spartacus alum said in a recent interview that actors almost have to have a social media presence, because if you get casted, they expect you to promote the show. Well, maybe Antonio is getting enough theater work that he doesn't want to bother with social media? (He's been doing theater stuff in his native New Zealand. And he's 51 so maybe just going into semi-retirement and doing theater is enough for him?)

Date: 2022-02-11 04:47 pm (UTC)Did I tell you that my mom asked me to show her how to use tumblr? lol. There's some guy she follows on youtube and apparently he shares more information on tumblr and he'll make videos and refer to his tumblr posts and she's mad that she doesn't know all the details.

Date: 2022-02-11 08:52 pm (UTC)That's a good point; theaters must want actors to have social media so they can promote. Someone did say that New Zealand just has a really thriving theater scene, so maybe they are not desperate for publicity? Who knows?
