Make a list of all the characters in your icons (although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetise it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing etc. Then write your reaction to each pairing (or a snippet of a hypothetical fic featuring each pairing)
Many of the resulting pairings were…different
Arclight and Book – So Arclight is a barely-featured follower of Magneto in X-men III, and we have her with the preacher from Firefly. I just don’t see a romantic connection. But if she ever wanted to seek a spiritual way, maybe he could help her. Oh, and as we see in X-men III and Serenity, they are both like dead so I guess that makes a wedding even less likely.
Boromir and Callisto – Another Magneto henchwoman, this time paired with a member of the Fellowship of the Rings. Um, see above – another couple where both members are dead. But putting that aside for a moment, both of them have a bad boy/bad girl kind of streak. I could actually see there being some chemistry here but I don’t know if it would work out in the long run.
Inara and Jayne – Only in Jayne’s dreams. (But hey, at least they're in the same fandom!)
Jean Grey and Jetta – An X-woman and a Misfit. Hmmmm. I don’t get a strong lesbian vibe from either one of them. Before she got possessed by Phoenix (or if you just want to ignore that stupid movie), Jean seems too conventionally “nice” and “good girl” for her to have compatibility with Jetta.
Juggernaut and Kaylee – No. Way. She likes sweet and caring doctors, not brutal Magneto-followers
Lady Deathstrike and Magneto – This I could actually see. Except Deathstrike isn’t given much of a personality in X-men II before Wolverine kills her. But if she had one and wasn’t being controlled by that guy (and if she wasn’t dead), I don’t think this pairing would be out of the question.
Mal and Natalie Portman – Argh! I can’t cross fictional characters with real life actors. And I don’t know much about Portman other than that she’s beautiful, a vegetarian, and needs acting lessons if her performances in the Star Wars movies are any indication. He’s too hung up on Inara to be able to pursue a relationship anyway.
Pizzazz and Pyro – Yes! She’d love to make him her bedroom whipping boy for a few weeks and he’d gleefully go along with it.
River and Rogue – Angst meets mental illness. All I can say is, if they do get together, they’re going to need a lot of counseling. And I really prefer Rogue with Gambit.
Roxy and Simon – A bad girl Misfit with Serenity’s good boy doctor. No way. I can’t see her giving him a second glance. And if Serenity’s ending is any indication, he likes sweet good girls.
Stormer and Wash – You know? If Zoe wasn’t in the picture...maybe. They are both very kind, sweet people. She might really appreciate his sense of humor and he'd like her kind heart. But on the other hand, he might prefer a more tough “warrior woman” type and she might want more of a bad boy, if her taste in bandmates and boyfriends is similar.
Zoe and --- that’s it, I’m out of people to pair her with. Will just have to pair her with me!

River/Rogue would be healthier than most of the River/anybody in Firefly pairings, at the very least.

This is true. A lot of the River/someone in Firefly pairings are really scary. They all are.

Date: 2007-06-26 01:29 am (UTC)I kinda feel that this is one of my sekrit unpopular fandom opinions, since a lot of people who I respect write River pairings. But I get hung up on consent issues. Not because her age, but because of her very frail mental health, and that she's an uncontrolled telepath, with few or no boundaries. I just have difficulty imaging her as being capable of anything other than very dubious consent, at best.

Date: 2007-06-25 05:24 am (UTC)Roxy and Simon - I can see that, actually. She'd be an education for him.
Stormer and Wash - Oh God, that would be adorable!

Date: 2007-06-26 01:43 am (UTC)She did go after that "good boy" Jeff Wright in one episode. I thought it was totally OOC but since it is canon...maybe she would like Simon after all.

What if it was like, a secret? And their love was so tender and quiet? And he got through all her bluster and she calmed him down so that he didn't have to compete.
You have some outstanding pairings! These are some awesome crazy ideas.
