I love Netflix. Got my first movie yesterday and already have like 40 films on my queue. And it's just so much fun to go through and rate movies. Why on earth did I wait so long to do this?? It's almost as much fun as Paperbackswap.com!

Tomorrow and Sunday I'm taking an advanced self-defense class. I took the basic class a few years ago and loved it, even though it was hard. I know this class will be even harder but I can do it. I just hope I don't pull a glute muscle like I did last time - it was sore for months, literally.

Doris's birthday is in early December and I'm trying to decide what to get her. I think she likes gadgets. Technical things. She got me a GPS for my birthday and I can tell she loves it too. I'm trying to think of some ideas for a techie sort of gift for her.

Does she have an iPod? If she's not yet iPodded or she only has one variety, you could get her something like one of the new iPod nanos, which are so beautiful, and a transmitter dock for her car (she commutes a good distance, right?).

Thanks for the suggestion. And I know it sounds totally contradictory to what I posted, but she does have an ipod and she doesn't use it. She does generally like gadgets though, I swear!

well IMO Ipods are crap. other mp3 player brands are better. I've had an IRiver for about 5 years and I love it.

Maybe you could get her some flash drives. I'm crazy for memory.

Noise-cancelling headphones to go with the ipod she doesn't use? I think that's what my tech-lover is quietly lusting after at the moment.

I haven't taken a self-defence class since high school. It'd probably be a good idea to update, especially since "run really fast" is no longer one of my available options.

Was the self-defense class you took in high school part of the curriculum or something you decided to sign up for on your own, apart from what your school taught?

A bit of both?

Our last year at school didn't have gym classes scheduled (except for those taking it as a formal subject) - instead we spent Friday morning doing "something active".

The was a list of ten or so available activities one could sign up for each term - I've no idea why I chose them, but I took rock-climbing, wind-surfing and self-defence.

It's well past time I took a refresher, but I've never hit anyone in my life (caveat : that I remember, but I'm told I was a placid toddler) and the very thought makes me queasy.

Well, here's (http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/17/nokia-n810-gets-official/) a new gadget I want to get my hands on. It's like a large wireless-networking-enabled PDA, with a built-in GPS (and a whole bunch of other stuff). Despite the fact it's a Nokia, it's not a phone. It'd be great for toting around to places and being able to play around on the internet, watch movies, do some work, blah blah. With it being Bluetooth-enabled, you can hook up to the internet via your phone connection (assuming your phone has Bluetooth) if you're desperate. But it's not cheap.

But if Doris would like something a bit less techie, but still sexy in a gadget way, I like the look of these new Leatherman tools (http://www.leatherman.com/products/tools/skeletool-CX/default.asp).

Finally, check out BoingBoing's gadget blog (http://gadgets.boingboing.net/) for umpteen other suggestions. :-)

Have fun at the self-defense class! I hope it will go well. I really need to do that once my back starts feeling better or I'm further along in physical therapy (I start Monday).

Gadgets, gadgets...my first thought was "get some cool spy gadgets!" They have some really fun stuff out there like videocamera pens, but I don't know how practical any of that would be. What about something like a telescope with a book on astronomy to put it to use?

Thanks for the ideas! She does like the Planetarium a lot...

Groovy! In that case, if not a telescope (or along with it) maybe another space-related gift would be good, like a year's membership to the Planetarium?

Wow, self-defense is something I've wanted to learn for a long time. Maybe I should try to find a class too. :)

The classed I took was through IMPACT Chicago and I can't recommend them highly enough. Their website has links to other IMPACT chapters here:

The class - if it's a good one - may make you feel that way. :)
