Twice I've gone for about 7 days offline, while on a cruise. I had so much fun on the cruise that I didn't feel withdrawal at all; in fact, I liked it.
What I have really been feeling overwhelmed by are work emails. I get so many emails as part of my job. I was once in a class at work where they asked if there is anything we spend as much time on as emails for work. Unless I am on a long vacation like on a cruise, I'm always having to check it. Even now, being on a business trip, it still seems like there's an expectation that we get on email frequently. I feel seriously depressed at the thought of my next 24 years or so chained to this.

Date: 2010-03-02 04:02 pm (UTC)That sucks that your company expects you to check e-mail a lot on business trips. I mean, isn't the idea that you are still only beholden to the company for regular office hours or organized meeting activities and that your evenings are technically your own? I love my computer and all that but some days I just want to leave it behind.

Unfortunately my company (and many other corporations) seem to believe that once you get to a certain level, they pretty much own you. I'm not super high up, but I am at the level that we call a Manager, and we do expect a lot from our Supervisors, Managers, Directors, and Officers.
